Carme Ruscalleda receives the Andorra Taste Award
The Catalan chef is a benchmark in the preservation of popular recipes through innovation and creativity.
In previous editions, the Andorra Taste Award has gone to two internationally renowned chefs: the Frenchman Michel Bras, who pioneered vegetable cuisine in the world long before it became fashionable, and Gastón Acurio, who revalued traditional Peruvian cuisine and made it known throughout the world. On this occasion, Andorra Taste will reward the professional career of the chef Carme Ruscalleda.
Internationally recognised for her exceptional contribution to gastronomy, the Catalan chef has been awarded a total of seven Michelin stars throughout her career, a milestone that places her among the most prestigious chefs in the world. Ruscalleda grew up in a family of farmers and food traders, which sparked her interest in cooking at an early age. Although she studied commerce, her love of gastronomy led her to open a gourmet products shop with her husband, Toni Balam.
In 1988 they went one step further and opened the restaurant Sant Pau in their home town of Sant Pol de Mar. The restaurant quickly gained recognition for its innovative cuisine, combining tradition and modernity, and was awarded its first Michelin star in 1991, the second in 1996 and the third in 2006. In 2004, Ruscalleda extended his influence by opening a branch of Sant Pau in Tokyo, Japan, which was also awarded a Michelin star. And in 2009, together with his son Raül Balam, who will also be attending Andorra Taste, Ruscalleda opened the restaurant Moments** at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Barcelona. Throughout his career, Ruscalleda has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the National Gastronomy Award and the Creu de Sant Jordi, one of the most prestigious distinctions awarded by the Catalan government.
